  35.         MISC:During the last several years droughts and plagues of locusts have 
  36.         caused widespread food shortages and years of civil war have devastated
  37.         the economy of Chad. The climate is tropical in the south, gradually 
  38.         becoming dry desert in the north. The terrain is broad, arid plains in 
  39.         the center, desert in the north, mountains in the northwest, and 
  40.         lowlands in the south. Lake Chad is the most significant water body in 
  41.         the Sahel region. 2% of the land is arable. 85% of the labor force is 
  42.         engaged in subsistence farming, herding, and fishing. Chad is a 
  43.         landlocked country. In 1986 35% of Chad's total budget was set aside 
  44.         for its military. It became independent on 11 August, 1960. Member of 
  45.         UN since 1960.
