MISC:During the last several years droughts and plagues of locusts have
caused widespread food shortages and years of civil war have devastated
the economy of Chad. The climate is tropical in the south, gradually
becoming dry desert in the north. The terrain is broad, arid plains in
the center, desert in the north, mountains in the northwest, and
lowlands in the south. Lake Chad is the most significant water body in
the Sahel region. 2% of the land is arable. 85% of the labor force is
engaged in subsistence farming, herding, and fishing. Chad is a
landlocked country. In 1986 35% of Chad's total budget was set aside
for its military. It became independent on 11 August, 1960. Member of
UN since 1960.
